Why is it a tenant's responsibility to maintain batteries in Smoke Detectors, Co2 Detectors, and Electronic Doors? We provide the operating devices fully charged at the beginning of your tenancy and have complied with occupancy codes to prepare the apartment. Tenants often don't value these items and will remove them from the walls when they begin to beep. For your own safety don't do this! The lease agreement you signed requires you to keep these things active an in place at all times, for YOUR safety. Should a fire start or equipment start to malfunction, without a working alarm in the designated spot you may not be alerted in time to get out of the apartment to avert danger. For your own safety, press the button on these devices twice a year and ensure that after holding a few second it sounds an alarm. This is how you know its working! Its in your best interest to ensure they are working and have active batteries at all time. Electronic door locks: Some of our apartments offer electronic entry. Tenants don't have to worry about losing keys or locksmith charges if they do. With your own personal code, you can get access to your apartment at any time and don't have to carry keys! Per your lease, its your responsibility to keep working batteries in these devices at all times. To prevent batteries deteriorating quickly, be sure to activate the key pad and use it once a week or once a month and that will make the batteries last longer. You'll receive several notifications when the batteries drop low. If you fail to replace them, the door will not work. If you happen to miss one by a few days, hopefully you have two doors on your unit and can enter in the other door to access the apartment and change the batteries. However, if you do fail to get those batteries changed in time (usually there are several weeks before it runs out after it notifies you), we will be able to come get you in, however there will be a fee for the service visit and a charge for the battery delivery. Its much more cost effective to have AA batteries on hand and simply swap them out when needed.
